masc voc sg of vinaya (noun); nt voc sg of vinaya (noun); imp 2nd sg of vinayati (verb); reflx aor 1st sg of vinayi (verb)
Etymology. vi- (apart, asunder) + √nī (lead, carry): literally "leading apart" or "leading out". The prefix vi- conveys the sense of distinguishing, clarifying, or removing—things sorted apart. Related to Latin dūcere (lead) and English "lead" via Indo-European *deuk-. The concrete image of leading something away from a confused mass (vi-) and out of harm (nī-) becomes the abstract discipline of distinguishing and settling: the Buddha's Vinaya removes confusion and misconduct by leading the monastic community toward clarity.
