Etymology. Root √ju (compare Sanskrit yuj- "to join, yoke", and English "yoke"), with the prefix u- (ud-, "up, out") giving the sense of "standing up straight, erect"; the concrete image is of something extended upward without bend or deviation. Related to Latin iugum "yoke" and English "yoke", all from the same Indo-European root *yeug-.
