noun
Etymology. Sino-Japanese reading of Chinese 蓮 (lián). The kanji combines 艹 (grass) + 連 (connect), originally referring to the way lotus plants interconnect underwater. Cognate with Middle Chinese lien, Sanskrit padma. In Japanese, the native term is はす (hasu).
