At the Nikolaev railway station two friends met: one fat, the other thin. The fat one had just dined at the station, and his lips, glossed with butter, shone like ripe cherries. He smelled of sherry and orange blossom. The thin one had just stepped out of a carriage and was loaded down with suitcases, bundles, and hatboxes. He smelled of ham and coffee grounds. From behind his back peeped a thin little woman with a long chin — his wife, and a tall schoolboy with a squinting eye — his son.

“Porfiry!” exclaimed the fat one on seeing the thin one. “Is it you? My dear fellow! It’s been ages!” — “Good heavens!” the thin one said, astonished. “Misha! My childhood friend! Where did you spring from?” The friends kissed three times and fixed their tear-filled eyes on each other. Both were pleasantly stunned.

“My dear!” began the thin one after the kissing. “I never expected this! What a surprise! Well, take a good look at me! The same handsome fellow you always were! The same charmer and dandy! Ah, good lord! Well, how are you? Rich? Married? I’m married already, as you see… This here is my wife, Luiza, née Wanzenbach… a Lutheran… And this is my son, Nafanail, a pupil of the third class. Nafanya, this is a friend of my childhood! We studied together at the grammar school!” Nafanail thought a little and took off his cap.

“We studied together at the grammar school!” the thin one went on. “Remember how they teased you? They called you Herostratus because you burned a hole in a school book with a cigarette, and me Ephialtes because I loved telling tales. Ho-ho… We were children! Don’t be afraid, Nafanya! Come closer to him… And this is my wife, née Wanzenbach… a Lutheran.” Nafanail thought a little and hid behind his father’s back.

“How are you getting on, friend?” asked the fat one, gazing rapturously at his friend. “Serving somewhere? Risen in rank?” — “I serve, my dear fellow! A collegiate assessor for the second year now, and I have the Stanislas. The salary is poor… well, God be with it! My wife gives music lessons, and I make wooden cigarette cases on the side. Excellent cigarette cases! I sell them at a rouble apiece. If anyone takes ten or more — a discount, you understand. We get by somehow. I served in a department, you know, and now I’ve been transferred here as a head clerk in the same office… I’ll be serving here. Well, and you? A state councillor by now, no doubt? Eh?”

“No, my dear, aim higher,” said the fat one. “I have already risen to privy councillor… I have two stars.” The thin one suddenly turned pale and froze, but soon his face twisted in every direction into the broadest of smiles; it seemed as if sparks showered from his face and eyes. He himself shrank, hunched, narrowed… His suitcases, bundles, and hatboxes shrank and puckered… His wife’s long chin grew still longer; Nafanail drew himself up to attention and buttoned all the buttons of his uniform…

“I… your Excellency… Very pleased, sir! A friend, one might say, of childhood — and suddenly you have risen to such a grandee, sir! Hee-hee, sir.” — “Come, enough!” the fat one winced. “Why this tone? You and I are childhood friends — what is this rank-worship for!” — “Mercy… how can you, sir…” giggled the thin one, shrinking still more. “Your Excellency’s gracious attention… is like life-giving moisture, as it were… This here, your Excellency, is my son Nafanail… my wife Luiza, a Lutheran, in a certain way…”

The fat one was about to object, but on the thin one’s face was written so much reverence, sweetness, and respectful sourness that the privy councillor felt sick. He turned away from the thin one and offered him his hand in parting. The thin one pressed three of his fingers, bowed with his whole torso, and giggled like a Chinese: “hee-hee-hee.” His wife smiled. Nafanail clicked his heel and dropped his cap. All three were pleasantly stunned.
