So Kandata cried in a loud voice: “Hey, you sinners! This spider’s thread is mine! Who on earth gave you leave to climb it? Get down! Get down!”

That very instant it happened. The spider’s thread, which until then had had nothing wrong with it, suddenly broke with a snap just where Kandata hung. There was no saving him. Before he could even cry out, cutting the wind, spinning round and round like a top, he plunged headlong, in the blink of an eye, into the depths of the darkness.

Afterward, only the spider’s thread of Paradise remained, glittering thin, hanging short in a sky without moon or stars.

Lord Buddha stood at the edge of the lotus pond of Paradise and watched all that happened; and presently, when Kandata had sunk like a stone to the bottom of the Pool of Blood, he took on a sorrowful face and began strolling again. Kandata’s merciless heart, that would save itself alone from Hell — and its falling, in fitting punishment, back into the old Hell — must have seemed wretched indeed, seen through Lord Buddha’s eyes.

But the lotuses of the lotus pond of Paradise are not in the least concerned with such things. Those jewel-like white flowers sway their calyxes about Lord Buddha’s feet, and from the golden stamens at their centers an indescribably fine fragrance flows ceaselessly over the surroundings. In Paradise, too, it must already be drawing near noon.
